Privacy Policy
Beat Chess! Coach for iPhone and iPad · Effective 30 October 2026
In short: Beat Chess! Coach collects no personal data. It has no accounts, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking. Your games and analyses stay on your device. The only thing it sends anywhere is a username you type into Mistake Patterns, to Lichess or Chess.com, to fetch that player's public games.
What the app keeps on your device
The app stores these in its own storage on your device. They are never sent to us or anyone else, and deleting the app deletes them:
- The games you finish against the coaches (your game history), with the coach's grade and notes on each move.
- Your settings: the last coach and colour you played, and the Mistake Patterns options (site, username, number of games, game speeds).
- Whether you have bought the full unlock, so the app works offline.
The analysis is done by Stockfish, a chess engine that runs inside the app on your device.
Mistake Patterns and your chess games
When you use Mistake Patterns, the app asks Lichess (lichess.org) or Chess.com for the recent public games of the username you enter, and analyses them on your device. That request goes from your device directly to the site you choose; like any web request, it includes your device's IP address. We never see it. Lichess and Chess.com handle these requests under their own privacy policies. The app sends nothing else to them and does not sign you in.
Purchases
The in-app purchase is handled by Apple through the App Store. We receive no payment details and no information about you; the app only asks the App Store whether your Apple Account has bought the unlock. Apple's privacy policy covers the purchase.
What we don't do
We don't collect, store, sell or share personal data. The app uses no analytics, advertising or tracking tools, and contains no third-party SDKs that do. We don't know who you are or how you use the app.
This website
This website (not the app) uses Google Analytics to count visits and see which pages are read. Google Analytics sets cookies and receives information such as the pages you view, your browser and device type and your approximate location, under Google's privacy policy. You can block it with your browser's settings or the Google Analytics opt-out add-on. The website's fonts are loaded from Google Fonts.
Children
The app collects no data from anyone, including children.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with a new date.

Terms of Use
Beat Chess! Coach for iPhone and iPad · Effective 30 October 2026
In short: Enjoy the app and learn from it. The coach's advice comes from a chess engine and can be wrong. Purchases go through Apple. Lichess and Chess.com are separate services with their own rules.
Agreement
By downloading or using Beat Chess! Coach ("the app") you agree to these terms. The app is licensed to you, not sold, through Apple's App Store; Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement also applies. Where these terms and Apple's agreement differ, these terms apply to the extent the law and Apple's agreement allow.
Open source
The app includes Stockfish, which is free software under the GNU General Public License, version 3, and the app itself is released under the same licence. Nothing in these terms limits the rights the GPL gives you.
Purchases
The full unlock is a one-time, non-consumable in-app purchase. Apple processes the payment and handles refunds under its own terms; to ask for a refund, go to reportaproblem.apple.com. You can restore the purchase on any device signed in to the same Apple Account. Prices can change, and what the unlock includes is described in the app at the time you buy it.
Coaching and analysis
The grades, explanations, hints and patterns come from a chess engine and automated analysis. They are meant to help you learn and can be incomplete or wrong. The coaches' strength ratings are approximate. Some coaches make deliberate mistakes for you to spot.
The coaches
The coaches are fictional characters. Their names, portraits and personalities are invented, and any resemblance to real people is not intended to depict them.
Lichess and Chess.com
Mistake Patterns uses the public interfaces of Lichess and Chess.com. These are independent services, not affiliated with Beat Chess!; your use of them is subject to their terms. Use the feature for your own games or other public games, and don't use it to overload those services.
Acceptable use
Don't use the app, or its analysis, to cheat in games against other people, online or over the board.
No warranty
The app is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, to the fullest extent the law allows. We don't promise that it will be error-free or always available, or that it will improve your rating.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental or consequential damages arising from your use of the app. Our total liability for any claim relating to the app is limited to the amount you paid for it. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under consumer law that can't be waived.
Changes
We may update these terms. The new version will be posted on this page with a new date; continuing to use the app after that means you accept it.
